Summary

The main responsibilities of the Tooling Engineer role are the introduction of new Projects & Tooling to the site.

To provide Tooling Engineering support to existing projects that are currently being introduced into Manufacturing.

Essential Functions

·         Review & compile incoming new project data such as 3D /2D Cad (component & tooling related) to ensure the latest revision is maintained and released to the toolmaker.

·         Set-up of Tooling associated project files & folders onto the company main drives. Cad files / tool manuals / HR spares / Steel Certs etc.

·         Interaction with both Customer and contract toolmaker representatives on a regular basis.

·         Vetting of possible new toolmaking companies as suppliers of Injection Mould Tooling for new Projects

·         Sourcing & vetting of tooling quotations (pilot tooling and multi cavity production tools)

·         Selection of approved toolmakers to support assigned projects.

·         Compiling and submittal of URS / DQ documents to the selected toolmakers.

·         Review Cad drawings in relation to component mouldability / GD&T tolerancing / Steel safe considerations.

·         Support and review early-stage mould flow analysis meetings / reports.

·         Carry out initial reviews of proposed tool designs considering overall tool design integrity / materials selection / manufacturing / maintenance /spares / IMM – Clean Room compatibility etc.

·         Lead final design “Design Qualification” DQ’s with the customer and toolmaker.

·         Prepare and present “Design for Manufacture “presentations to customers as required.

·         Attend mid build progress meetings / reviews at toolmakers. Lead, when necessary, component / drawing / tooling updates to progress the tool through its validation process.

·         Review of FOT (First Off Tool) samples in relation to flash / sink / burns / shorts / tool damage etc in relation to agreement to proceed to Tool FAT trial date.

·         Attend Tool FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) Trial along with Process Eng to carry out Tool build reviews to confirm manufacture in adherence to signed Tool URS / DQ doc’s.

·         Confirm all associated tooling documents are present and correct before signing off tool acceptance.

·         Support the Manufacturing facility with install of the new tooling up to and including OQ & PQ qualifications.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Training

Ideally the preferred candidate will have several year’s experience in the Design/ Manufacture / Processing of Multicavity -Hot Runner Injection Mould Tools. Their background should be of the following.

Possessing excellent interpersonal, teamwork, IT and communication skills, it is essential that the Tooling Engineer works effectively with others to achieve challenging objectives. The Tooling Engineer will be a self-starter, results-oriented with a strong work ethic and the ability and resilience to work under pressure.


·         Apprenticeship time served toolmaker / tool designer or qualification in Mechanical Engineering (Diploma / Degree level) with 5+ years’ experience working in a Injection Moulding Manufacturing Environment or Contract Toolroom.

·         Familiarity with analysing of Mould Flow programs / reports.

·         Working knowledge of 3D CAD (e.g. SolidWorks / Inventor)

·         Familiarity of Hydraulics / Pneumatics / Servo Motors (in relation to tooling)

·         Good understanding of dimensioning / GD&T / reading Engineering drawings

·         Familiar with current tooling manufacture practices.

·         Good working capabilities with MS Office (Word / Excel / MS PowerPoint)

o   Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

o   Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

o   Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

·         Computer Skills

o   Good understanding and ability to perform tasks and create documents using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.

o   Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. 

o   Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

·         Reasoning Ability

o   Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

o   Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
